House rejects Brown’s animal shelters bill

MONTGOMERY — In a 60-22 vote (should read 67-28 vote-LOHVAL) Tuesday, the Alabama House of Representatives rejected a Jacksonville lawmaker’s bill to require animal shelters to collect monthly reports on the number of animals they euthanize.

“I don’t know what happened,” said Rep. Koven L. Brown. “How did this become so controversial?”

The bill would have required animal shelters to keep monthly reports on the number of animals they accept, adopt and euthanize, as well as staff salaries at those shelters. The reports wouldn’t be submitted to the state, but shelters would have to make them available to people who request them.
