Federal, state officials looking for ways to reduce the population

“…hunters have proven to be as much a part of the problem as a part of the solution.

The number of wild hogs in Alabama has increased to a quarter million, partially because hunters have illegally moved feral swine across the state for hunting purposes, according to Dr. Mark Smith with the Auburn University Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

Although it is illegal to move wild hogs in Alabama, Smith said some hunters are trapping feral pigs in areas where they live and then moving them to other areas so that they can hunt them.

Then that population grows, and then we have a problem with those pigs destroying habitats and crops,” Smith explained.”
