Just Saying: Too many of our leaders just following the money

Even before Wren’s walk of shame last week, there was evidence of just how much influence a little money could buy in our Legislature. Two popular bills among voters and lawmakers — one limiting the interest on payday and title loans and another protecting low-cost spay-neuter clinics — were struggling yet again.

Why those bills weren’t sailing through would have been a mystery to anyone … unless they followed the money.

Payday loan lobbyists had dumped thousands of dollars into the campaign accounts of lawmakers — Democrats and Republicans alike — on an important committee. A veterinarian lobby had dumped similar piles of money into the campaigns of other influential politicians.

Both lobbying groups got their money’s worth, as both bills failed. And two things our lawmakers know were right didn’t get done. That’s no way to govern.

Money is the root of all evil.
